Dhurringile Prison expansion work begins

Works have begun on the $17 million Dhurringile Prison expansion project.
Located 160km north of Melbourne, the minimum security prison currently houses 214 prisoners. The expansion will add a further 54 beds to the facility.
Victorian Corrections Minister Andrew McIntosh visited the site to mark the occasion. He said the project will be a boost for the local economy, with the prison sourcing supplies from local businesses and hiring local people.
Originally built in 1877, the site was a homestead for a large farm. Today, Dhurringile is a pre-release facility where prisoners undertake on-site employment and meaningful community reparation via community assistance programs.
