Woolacotts was engaged by Tract Consulting on behalf of Parks Victoria to deliver engineering services for the Warburton Redwood Forest Visitor Facilities Improvements project.
The Redwood Forest, located in the Yarra Ranges National Park, had become an increasingly popular destination but lacked adequate infrastructure to support growing visitor numbers. The project provided a comprehensive upgrade to visitor amenities, including expanded car parking, accessible public toilet facilities, a visitor shelter, and formalised walking trails.
Woolacotts was responsible for delivering civil and traffic, engineering services to support these improvements. The scope included validating carpark capacity, designing drainage systems, and developing tender-ready documentation for construction.
Several challenges were encountered during the project. Environmental and heritage considerations demanded careful planning to minimise disturbance to sensitive vegetation and comply with cultural heritage requirements. Additionally, stormwater management was critical due to the absence of formal drainage systems, and traffic safety improvements were necessary to accommodate buses and emergency vehicles on narrow access roads.
Permeable surfaces were recommended to manage drainage and protect tree roots. Bio-retention swales and rain gardens were incorporated to provide sustainable stormwater management.
The team provided technical leadership from concept design through to detailed documentation and construction services, ensuring compliance with Australian Standards and local regulations. The solutions enhanced the visitor experience by creating safe, accessible facilities while protecting environmental and cultural values.
The Warburton Redwood Forest Visitor Experience Upgrade was successfully completed as a landmark project that balanced visitor amenity, environmental protection, and cultural heritage.
Woolacotts’ integrated engineering approach ensured that the design met the highest standards of safety, sustainability, and functionality for one of Victoria’s most iconic natural attractions.
