The George Street Streetscape project involved widening the pedestrian area along George Street, between Alfred and Lower Fort Streets, to enhance the existing uses of the area, improve pedestrian movements, and generally upgrade the streetscape and public areas.
As part of the project, kerbs were realigned and pavements upgraded. This required the location of existing services be identified, so that the design of the project minimized costly diversions, while meeting the overall project objectives. At times, this required close collaboration with the project landscape architect.
Analyses of stormwater drainage systems were undertaken, and modifications made to cater for the drainage paths altered as a result of the works.
As the work was carried out in the historic Rocks precinct, the project required detailed consideration to the treatment of heritage items within the area.
On the successful completion of the George Street improvement works, our commission was extended to undertake the redevelopment of Jack Mundey Place, The Rocks. Jack Mundey Place is located on Argyle Street between George Street and Harrington Street, a mixed-use area comprising pedestrian thoroughfare, retail trade outs, The Rocks Markets and special events.
The project involved the modification of the existing street to create an open pedestrian area. The creation of the pedestrian area required the removal of steps, such as kerbs, and the consequent modification of the stormwater drainage system and minor alterations to services. Close collaboration was required to ensure that engineering design of the works were compatible with landscape objects, as well as maintaining heritage items within the area.
