Revitalizing Long Reef: Woolacotts’ Expertise Enhances Coastal Resilience & Community Access

The Long Reef Boardwalk and Bridge Upgrade marks a significant step in revitalizing one of Sydney’s most cherished coastal walks, connecting Long Reef Golf Course to Long Reef Beach. Construction has commenced on the upgrade, which replaces the ageing timber structures with a durable, low-maintenance boardwalk and bridge designed to withstand the challenges of the coastal environment while preserving its natural character.
Woolacotts was engaged by Thompson Berrill Landscape Design, on behalf of Northern Beaches Council, to deliver structural and civil engineering design as well as supervision services during construction. Woolacotts’ role focused on developing a robust and sustainable design solution that enhances safety, longevity, and environmental performance.
To improve resilience against storm surges and coastal erosion, the new alignment has been carefully repositioned further inland. The design integrates insights from extensive environmental studies and an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment, ensuring that ecological values and cultural heritage are fully respected throughout the project.
Woolacotts’ engineers applied innovative material selection, foundation design, and drainage solutions to ensure the structure performs effectively in the harsh marine setting while reducing long-term maintenance requirements. This approach delivers enduring community value by providing safer, more sustainable access for pedestrians and recreational users.
Supported by a $500,000 NSW Government grant, the project is a key part of Northern Beaches Council’s strategy to improve open spaces and recreational infrastructure across the region. Construction is expected to be completed by late 2025, weather permitting.
Woolacotts contributed its engineering expertise and collaborative design approach to a project that exemplifies the balance between environmental stewardship, cultural sensitivity, and technical excellence.
