Rosehill Gardens is the home of the Group One Golden Slipper, the most prized horse race in the world for two-year-olds.

Woolacotts was engaged by Prodev Management for the engineering design of two ventilated tunnels constructed below the racecourse, allowing access to the centre of track for horses, pedestrians and vehicles on race days improving access around the area. We also designed supporting works including the road to and through the tunnel, stormwater drainage and the associated operating plant.

The project had a number of challenges that required resolution. These included:

  • The ground surface over the tunnel required specific grades and surface finish to cater for horse movements. This required a high level of detailing to ensure compliance
  • Strict programming of construction to facilitate the restoration of the course prior to the Spring Carnival
  • Relocation of the existing stormwater management system around the tunnel and ensuring it could reconnect to the existing system
  • Specifying the roof to the tunnels and subsoil drainage to ensure no disturbance to the training tracks (cinders, sand & turf) and the course proper (particularly at the edge of the tunnel)
