The National Art School, moved to the former Darlinghurst Gaol site in 1922, as part of Sydney Technical College. In 2022, it celebrated 100 years on the site and 200 years since the original Gaol’s construction. The Gaol, where 76 people were hanged between 1841 and 1907, gained NSW heritage listing in 2021. The school, now a State Significant Organization, signed a 45-year lease in 2019. Woolacotts have been engaged for various National Art School projects at the site over the years including:

  • Inspection and advice on preserving and strengthening existing roof and floor structure
  • National Art School Stage 1 Upgrade – Building 14 Library
  • Cell Block Theatre fit out, Building 20
  • Review of awnings to Buildings 1 & 2
  • Visitors’ carpark between Buildings 23 & 24
  • Alterations and additions to Buildings 2 & 3
  • New gallery in Building 23
  • Removal of internal column at Building 11
  • Review existing roofing structure in Cell Block Theatre (Bldg. 20) for upgraded threatre lighting
  • Building 11 Refurbishment
  • Remedial works due to burst water main
  • Structural and hydraulic services to the Annex building
  • New Master planning of the National Art School site
  • Stormwater drainage upgrades of the site
  • Review of floor and roof live load ratings at various buildings
